Brainerd, MN Fishing Update: Top Catches and Techniques for May
Brainerd Region Geological Marker - Crow Wing, MN
Fishing in the Brainerd area has been productive as the weather warms up, offering anglers great opportunities on both the Brainerd Lakes and surrounding waters. Walleye fishing has been consistent, especially on Pelican Lake and North Long Lake. Anglers are having success using jigging techniques with minnows or leeches, particularly in the early morning or late evening when the fish are more active. Walleyes are starting to move toward their spawning grounds, so be sure to target deeper structures near drop-offs and humps.
Northern Pike are also active in the Brainerd area, with many being caught around weed beds and shallow bays. Spinnerbaits and soft plastics have been the go-to baits, providing a good chance for pike in the shallows. Largemouth Bass and Smallmouth Bass are biting well, especially on Round Lake and Cross Lake, with anglers using crankbaits and soft plastics to lure them in. The smallmouth bass bite is particularly strong, and with water temperatures rising, they’re becoming more aggressive.
As for panfish, Crappies and Bluegills are showing up in shallow waters, making for a fun and family-friendly fishing experience. Crappies have been especially active around brush piles and submerged structures in Lake Hubert and Lake Edward. For those targeting Musky, although the bite has been slower, anglers are still seeing success using large baits around weed edges and structure.
The weather has been mild with periodic warm days, which has led to ideal fishing conditions in the Brainerd area. As the fishing season continues to progress, expect more species to become active and more exciting fishing opportunities to emerge.
